Pothole Profits
Roads in Jakarta always have potholes in them, even the main business and protocol roads. They serve a purpose: profits for maintenance contractors and corrupt bureaucrats who support them. An Observer once said that there are huge discrepancies between inter-provinces roads that are free to use and inner city toll roads that requires hefty fees to access them. The inner city roads have similar burdens as inter-provices roads: cargo containers trucks and trailers, city cars, SUVs, and sometimes heavy equipments transporters. The discrepancies are the fact that inter-provinces roads will deteriorate faster than the inner-city toll roads, even 6-12 months after they are being repaired. This fact boggles the mind of many people. But the people are also aware that this fact is the results of rotten collaborations between bureaucrats and contractors so that the contractors can have jobs and "give donations" to the bureaucrats that allow them to do the jobs. Furthermore, less potholes mean less national budget allocations for road-maintenances, and less mark-up targets for the bureaucrats. To make matter worse, this year, 9 (nine) lives has been taken this year alone. They were killed when they suffered accidents related to potholes. Potholes are just one visible effect caused by bureaucracy corruptions. There are more severe accidents looming if the corruptions also affect purchasings of structural foundations and inner-strengtheners. Indonesian bureaucrats need to be reformed and the corrupt traditions need to be reduced, fast, otherwise lives will be taken away as effects of their short-sightings and selfish paradigms. |
