What Are Webcomics?
Comics are the combinations of drawn arts and texts meant to tell story in sequential orders so that the readers can be entertained and perhaps enlightened and can even take some lessons from the medium. And webcomics are the comics that are displayed on the web, mostly for free, and updated frequently according to the abilities of the creators. There are literally thousands of webcomics, ranging from cult-object like Megatokyo or Sinfest, to amateurish, made-it-cause-they-simply-feel-like-it comics adorning free webcomics hosting sites like webcomicsnation or drunkduck. The Webcomics are mostly made because the creators know they have ideas that need to be expressed but lack the qualities that are acceptable by printed-publishers. Frequently ideas that the webcomics are based on are good, but the artistic executions are sorely lacking; readers need to be extremely patient art-wise to enjoy the stories told. But many webcomics have captured the attentions of printed-publishers and thus adapted to printed formats. The examples are Megatokyo, Edgar Allan Poo, and America Jr. Platinum Studios, a printed-publisher on the other hands, have been doing the opposites of what their colleagues do. They publish their comics first on the web, and then printed them later. Webcomics have been gaining momentums by the end of 2007, with big publishers like DC and Marvel rolled out their own webcomics initiative; DC with Zuda and Marvel with their libraries of comics that can be seen online for subscriptions. Webcomic is another new medium made possible by the growth of the Internet, and have made thousands of creators and dreamers able to share and "publish" their creations for the websurfers to enjoy. |
